Reconnect. Represent. Build the Future.
The Cook Islands Basketball Federation (CIBF) is the official FIBA-recognised organisation responsible for the growth, development, and success of basketball in the Cook Islands. From local competitions to international tournaments, we oversee every pathway to representing our nation.
The Cook Islands Basketball Foundations was created to give young people across the islands a strong base in the sport while reconnecting Cook Islanders around the world to their heritage. Built on community, culture, and pride, the program offers more than just skills, it offers identity.
Representing the Cook Islands is an honor. For many who returned from overseas and struggled with whether to continue playing, basketball on home soil reignited their passion. Being back in the islands brought a renewed sense of purpose.
Coaching the youth became a responsibility:
A chance to lead
A chance to build
A chance to give back
This project exists to share that story, coming home, serving the community, and using basketball as a bridge between Cook Islanders near and far.
Time in the Cook Islands is special. Coming back to serve gives it meaning. Through this foundation, basketball becomes more than a sport—it becomes legacy.
To grow our national programme, we’re building a central database of Cook Islands athletes both in the islands and abroad.
Many of the international tournaments the Cook Islands competes in are FIBA-sanctioned, which means there are strict eligibility rules that all players must meet in order to officially represent the nation. These criteria are based on FIBA policies; such as citizenship, heritage, residency and are put in place to ensure fairness across all countries.
It’s important for people to understand that these rules are not set by us, but we are here to help guide players through the process. If someone finds they are not eligible to play for the Cook Islands at the international level, it doesn’t mean the journey ends. There are still pathways to be involved, develop, and contribute.
We have hubs that run local clubs, training programs, and community events both in the islands and abroad; where players can train, compete, mentor others, and stay connected to Cook Islands basketball. Whether eligible or not, there is always a place to belong and a role to play in growing the game.
Below are some answers and links some common questions.

Uniforms & gear
Tournament fees
Training camp expenses
While we do our best to reduce costs through sponsorship and support, it is important to understand that the Cook Islands Basketball Federation is not responsible for fully funding players to tournaments.
This includes travel, flights, and associated expenses.
In the past, we have taken pride in making the program free to play.
However, this was intended as a privilege, an honour, not an expectation. When players assume everything will be paid for, it can create an environment of entitlement rather than gratitude.
We believe that when athletes contribute, fundraise, or invest in their own journey, it builds commitment, pride, and respect for the opportunity to represent the Cook Islands. It leads to a more honest, honourable, and meaningful experience.
We want people who truly value the program, are willing to give back, and understand the cultural responsibility that comes with this experience. Representing the Cook Islands is more than playing it’s service, pride, and gratitude.
Payment plans or fundraising options may be available if you would like to be considered for upcoming events.
